Golf Course Problems Solved

Erosion – How It Occurs

To golfers, erosion can distort shots, stop forward progress, be an eyesore, and swallow golf balls. To course superintendents, erosion eats up revenues through maintenance and repairs. But in a more technical sense, erosion is...

  • Sediment detachment by wind or water
  • Sediment transport downstream or downslope
  • Sediment deposition in lakes, ponds, and fields

Fairways

Problem
Located on Oahu’s rainy side, the newly constructed Minami Golf Course features silty clay volcanic soils, and very heavy annual rainfall. Keeping this fragile soil in place was critical to getting the course open on time.

Solution
North American Green helped course Superintendent Sean Hoolehan work with nature, not against it. The result was quick grass establishment and a timely course opening. "North American Green blankets saved us a lot of repair work," says Hoolehan.

Shorelines

Problem
Repetitive action of wind-driven waves across lakes and ponds can gradually erode shorelines, necessitating costly repairs and even encroaching on nearby homes or landscape features.

Solution
North American Green’s C350 and P550 Composite Turf Reinforcement Mats provides proven turf reinforcement for even the toughest shoreline applications. When installed above the high-water line and below the low-water line, C350 and P550 create permanent shoreline protection, while providing an aesthetically pleasing alternative to rock or concrete. C350 is designed for use in areas affected by smaller waves. P550 is designed to resist the erosive forces from much more substantial waves. While providing effective immediate erosion control right after installation, these two products also provide the most successful conditions for seed germination and plant growth. After the turf establishes through the C350 and P550, the permanent structures provide turf reinforcement at levels once thought only obtainable from rock or concrete.

Storm Water Swales

Problem
Even in swales with limited slope gradients, rainwater can heavily impact the bare ground, dislodging and transporting seed, soil, and fertilizer, which causes excessive erosion and necessitates additional expenditures for regrading and hydroseeding.

Solution
North American Green’s erosion control products provide protection against sheet flow; reduce raindrop impact; hold seed in place; and retain moisture at the soil's surface to increase the rate of seed germination.

Stream Banks

Problem
While water hazards and storm water swales can present difficulties in erosion control, the damage and shear force of water and erosion can become devastating during storms along seemingly small streams and channels. As rainfall is diverted from multiple storm water swales to channels, small creeks, and streams, the concentrated flow can cause huge amounts of soil and vegetation removal during a single flow, leaving behind a great chasm where once stood a healthy, vegetated stream bank or channel.

Solution
C350 can provide cost-effective erosion control and vegetation reinforcement against the ravages of erosion on stream banks and in channels. The C350’s composite design, including a permanent, three-dimensional structure and coconut-fiber matrix, provides exceptional immediate and permanent erosion control. While providing effective immediate erosion control upon installation, C350 turf reinforcement matting also provides the most conducive conditions for seed germination and plant growth. After the turf establishes through the C350 and P550, the permanent structures provide reinforcement at levels once thought only obtainable from rock or concrete. C350 and P550 are the right erosion control tools to provide protection from the ravages of flowing water.

Slopes

Problem
Uncovered soil represents the ultimate "hazard," and unless you cover it before the first rain, you may face restricted playing, lost revenue, and unhappy golfers.

Solution
Effective erosion control is the key to avoiding the high price of erosion on your layout. North American Green supplies a variety of products to protect slopes, establish vegetative cover, and create superior playability.
