Consider the Benefits of Seed vs. Sod

  • Better end product. Landscapers consistently point out that seeded areas develop stronger root systems and healthier turf than areas where sod is applied.
  • Quality control. The erosion control product-plus-seed option give landscape contractors complete control over soil conditions, fertilizer applications and seed selection.
  • Shelf life. Erosion control products can be stored for long periods of time. Sod has an extremely limited shelf life.
  • Lighter weight. Sod can weigh from 50-75 pounds per square yard, compared with much lighter-weight erosion control products.
  • Economics. Sod installation can be as much as three times more expensive than blanket and seed installations.
  • Erosion protection. Sod installation can be problematic for slope and drainage channel applications. Often, sod must be pinned, adding to its cost, but not improving its erosion control. On steep slopes, the difficulty in handling sod becomes a real issue.
  • Flexibility. Particularly on golf course applications, but also on many other landscaping projects, the erosion control product-plus-seed solution offers flexibility in seed application rates and seed mixing ratios. Local sod farms simply cannot offer such diversity.
  • Speed. Large areas can be prepared, seeded, and covered by blanket very quickly.
  • Proven performance. North American Green erosion control blankets have been successfully used on numerous golf courses and commercial landscaping projects. Many landscaping firms actively request to use erosion control products-plus-seed for turf establishment applications.
